Firfield School

Firfield Primary School in Breaston, Derbyshire, is a large primary school with around 420 pupils aged 5–11 and a Good Ofsted rating. Improving reading and encouraging a love of reading was a key priority for the school, but with the library located in a corridor, the setting wasn’t ideal and did not provide the engaging environment staff wanted for pupils.

A dedicated bespoke library building was built in July 2023, providing the school with a new, dedicated reading space. Positive feedback from staff, parents and children quickly demonstrated its value, leading the school to order two further buildings which were completed in April 2025.

Reading Lodge

The Reading Lodge was the original building on site and is now used as the school library and dedicated reading space. It is one of the most engaging areas in the school, regularly used before and after school and during lunchtimes. The space also hosts the travelling book fair, giving parents the opportunity to browse and purchase books.

The buildings

Learning Lodge

The second building was introduced to provide a quieter space away from the main school, particularly for music lessons and small group work. Known as the Learning Lodge, it is used flexibly for larger groups of up to half a class, as well as smaller intervention sessions. The space supports a wide range of activities including catch-up groups, music lessons, maths work and reading activities, and is equipped with an interactive whiteboard to support teaching and learning.

"The rooms have made a real difference, engaging the whole community and they look fantastic.”

Meeting Room

The third building was added in response to the growing demand on the headteacher’s office. It provides a calm, professional space for meetings with parents, external professionals and governors. Teachers also use the room for planning and preparation, offering a quiet alternative to the main staff room. The space is well suited to meetings of 10 to 15 people, while remaining equally effective for smaller, more private conversations with parents.

Design and Specification

All three buildings have a concrete bases and are clad with fibre cement Hardie® Plank cladding in three colours, to reflect the school’s logo. The cladding is arranged in horizontal bands, starting with Mountain Sage at the base, Heathered Moss in the middle and Soft Green at the top.

Anthracite uPVC windows and doors are used throughout, with low-threshold access doors to support ease of movement and accessibility.

Each building has 3.6m double sliding doors to the front elevation, maximising natural light and strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor learning spaces. The larger building includes two additional windows to make sure it is light and bright.

Internally, the buildings are finished with plain board walls painted white and light grey laminate flooring with underfloor heating, controlled via wired thermostats.

Lighting and electrical specifications were tailored to the size of each building, the smaller classrooms each have nine internal spotlights, and the larger building has fifteen. All buildings include external canopy lighting, power sockets, and integrated fire alarms.
